Speed sensors (magnetic pickup)

Magnetic pickup (mpu) speed sensors convert the mechanical motion of an engine’s flywheel to an AC voltage without external power. It transmits a signal each time a flywheel gear tooth passes near the center pole piece to measure engine RPM.

Features

  • Solid-state, no moving parts
  • Self-powered, no external power needed
  • Easy connector, or wire installation
  • Withstand extreme temperature range
  • Hazardous duty, Explosion-proof, SIL3, CSA/ATEX
  • SAE UNC/UNF or Metric threads
  • USA or EU production only.

Magnetic pickups are generally installed radially into the engine housing or on a bracket. The gap between the pickup and the gear should ideally be within 0,25 and 1,02 mm to maintain a minimum of 1,5Vac to the device installed. In conditions where the device is a long distance away from the sensor or when signal interference is expected, a signal amplifier can be added to ensure correct operation. To attach multiple devices or instrumentation to one sensor, a pulse distributor is available with up to five independent outputs. Zero-velocity Hall effect sensors are also available, which are better suited for applications with relatively slower flywheel speeds or when the air gap exceeds 1,02 mm due to flywheel runout (mainly larger engines).
